Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative joint condition that occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones deteriorates over time. This leads to the bones rubbing against each other, resulting in pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. Although OA can affect any joint, it most commonly impacts the knees, hips, shoulders and hands.
Symptoms:
- Joint Pain - persistent or intermittent pain during or after movement
- Stiffness - particularly noticeable in the morning or after periods of inactivity
- Swelling
- Reduced range of motion: limited movement in the affected joint
- Grating sensation - a feeling of roughness within the joint
Causes and Risk Factors:
- Age - the risk of OA increases with age
- Genetics - a family history of OA may make you more susceptible
- Joint injury - previous injuries or surgeries to a joint can increase the risk of OA to that joint
- Repetitive stress - jobs, sports or activities that place significant stress on specific joints can contribute to the onset of OA later in life.
At Forefront Physiotherapy, we recommend these 4 tips for managing OA:
1. Pain Relief Strategies
Applying hot or cold packs to the affected joint(s) or using over the counter pain relievers can help manage pain and improve your quality of life.
2. Use of Assistive Devices
Canes and walkers, as well as braces or orthotics, can reduce joint stress, alleviate pain during movement, and improve mobility and stability.
3. Engage in Regular, Low-Impact Exercise
Activities such as walking, cycling, or swimming can strengthen the muscles around the joints, whilst supporting them and promoting stability. It’s also important to listen to your body and avoid pushing through pain. At Forefront Physio Geelong our dedicated team of physios can help you to manage your exercise routine effectively and safely.
