Osgood-Schlatters Disease (OSD)
Osgood-Schlatters Disease (OSD)
Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD) is a common knee condition that affects adolescents, particularly those who are active in sports. It is characterised by pain and swelling just below the knee, at the site where the patella tendon attaches to the tibia (shin bone). This condition arises due to inflammation of the tibial growth plate and is often related to repetitive stress or overuse.
Causes and Risk Factors:
OSD occurs during periods of growth where the body’s bones and muscles are developing rapidly. The primary cause is repetitive strain of the knee joint from activities that involve running, jumping or kneeling and is more prevalent in athletes who participate in sports such as soccer, basketball and gymnastics. Other risk factors include…
- Age: Most commonly affects children and adolescents aged 10-15 years.
- Sex: More frequently seen in boys, although it can also affect girls.
- Activity Level: High levels of physical activity and sports involvement increase risk.
Symptoms:
The hallmark symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter Disease include:
- Pain and tenderness just below the knee at the tibial tuberosity.
- Swelling and possible development of a bony lump in the same area.
- Pain that worsens with physical activity and improves with rest.
- Stiffness in the knee joint, particularly after activity.
Tips for managing OSD:
1. Rest and Activity Modification
Reduce activities that exacerbate symptoms to allow time for recovery. Continuing to push through the pain and increase discomfort can lead to longer recovery time however ultimately, recovery time differs from person to person so it is important to speak to a Physiotherapist from Forefront Physio Geelong to determine your individual prognosis.
2. Ice therapy
Applying an ice pack over the affected area can help reduce swelling and pain.
3. Pain Relief Medications
Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen can help to manage pain, inflammation and discomfort. This can help provide some well needed relief however it is important to note that pain medication will only mask the injury. It is important to receive professional diagnosis and take part in rehabilitation that will ultimately treat the condition. Please consult with your doctor about which medication is appropriate for you.
